Mammoth Mountain in California is surrounded by many ranges of “sleeping giants”. These stunning lands are sculpted for the eye by light and shadow in the most memorable ways. A valley near Mammoth stood out on my road trip home. This valley lived in shadow that day, but the blazing sun threatened to break into the low lands, spilling out between two ranges in the distance. Capturing the most dynamic play of light in an interesting composition was predominantly motivating me in the planning of this image. Once it felt successful, I stepped away and did not give in another look until I had fresh eyes the following day. In that moment I knew it was finished. The story had been told.
